Compression Stroke "Whistle" (M18, M14)
Compression Stroke "Whistle" (M18, M14)
A quick, audible means of determining when TDC is being approached on compression stroke of No.1 cylinder, for instance in the preparation for magneto timing.
For YOU, the maintainer, the “Compression Stroke WHISTLE” is designed to fit M18 (Lycoming, Continental) and M14 eMag Adapter) spark plug holes. Developed by 3D Stick and Rudder and successfully tested by our aircraft and power-plant mechanics (A&Ps) at (C17), this tool is a must if you are working alone or over baffle seals. The whistle is used to indicate when No.1 cylinder is on the compression stroke while doing routine TDC determination for magneto timing maintenance. Broadcasting 2.34Khz at 87db. with the air produced on the compression stroke, it saves having two people, a singed thumb or other visual means to determine the starting point of this diagnostic maintenance. Shown within the pictures is the "Whistle" in the No. 1 upper spark plug cylinder of a Continental TSIO-520 six-cylinder engine. Made to order, they are now prepared just for you and your bird.
Compression Cycle Process:
Finger thread the whistle’s BRASS M18 adapter into open spark plug boss of the cylinder No.1. You will then want to find the compression stroke of the cylinder. Rotate the propeller through in its normal rotation direction. As that cylinder rotates into the compression stroke and the piston approaches TDC, air will be forced through the Whistle with a pronounced audible broadcast of 87db. The maintenance action is to stop propeller rotation at the audible for further maintenance action to find timing marks. (Now available from 3D Stick and Rudder is the “Red Dot” timing projector, found next on this website)
